Does My Income Qualify?
Many low-income households across the state are already income-qualified to receive help paying past due or current water and sewer bills through the Low Income Household Water Assistance Program (LIHWAP).
Key factors to determine if you are eligible for LIHWAP assistance include:
- Your total household gross income is at or below 60% of the State Median Income (see table), or
- A household member is a current recipient of CalFresh, CalWORKs, or the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP);
- Your water or sewer utility system has enrolled in the program. Many, but not all water and sewer systems accept LIHWAP payments for past due and current bills.
- Renters: If your water and/or sewer bill is included in your rental payment you may still qualify for LIHWAP if you are past due on rent. To get the benefit, you would complete an agreement with your landlord as part of the application.
- Renters should also confirm with their landlord that their water or sewer utility is enrolled in the program.
